As Catholics, we are called to live out our faith not just through prayer and worship but through our actions. Jesus has taught us that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. He's also taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves. "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." Matthew 7:12
But what does that look like in everyday life? How can we truly serve others and show the love of Christ to those around us?

Living the Beatitudes
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives us the Beatitudes, a blueprint for how we live as His followers. He calls the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness “blessed.” He teaches us to show mercy, be peacemakers, and endure persecution for His sake.
This is not just about spiritual attitudes—it’s about action. It’s about showing mercy to those who need it. Every time we extend a hand to someone in need, we live out the Beatitudes.
Seeing Christ in Others
One of the most powerful ways we can help others is by truly seeing Christ in them. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we reach out to others, whether through volunteering, offering a listening ear, or meeting a material need, we are serving Jesus Himself.
It’s easy to get caught up in our busy lives, but Jesus reminds us that the heart of the Gospel is in loving others, especially those who are suffering or marginalized. When we see Christ in others, our service becomes a deeper expression of faith.
Acts of Mercy
The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are a great way to live out our faith. These acts—such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, comforting the sorrowful, and forgiving offenses—are tangible ways we can help others. They are rooted in Scripture and exemplified in the life of Jesus.
For example, when we donate to a food pantry, we are fulfilling the command to feed the hungry. When we visit the sick or comfort someone who is grieving, we are embodying Christ’s love and compassion. These acts don’t need to be grand or dramatic—sometimes the simplest acts of kindness make the biggest difference.
Serving in Our Daily Lives
Helping others doesn’t always mean doing something monumental. Sometimes it’s as simple as offering a kind word to someone who’s having a hard day or listening to someone who just needs to talk.
The beauty of living our faith through action is that we don’t need to wait for a big event or project to serve. Every moment is an opportunity to love others as Christ loves us.
